OVER
A music video for pop artist soracalling
sora - OVER
Sora is a pop singer/songwriter that’s grown a following through Spotify and their fun music videos circulating YouTube so I was beyond honored when they asked me to take part on their summer song release. The concept was a fun beachy lyric video that literally dove into a deep water magical atmosphere. After hearing the song I was hooked and then once me and sora discussed the art direction, I couldn’t wait to begin production.

Early Concept art
Sora had originally pitched two main scenes to me along with a massive transition when the beat dropped into the outro.
The atmosphere of the first scene is made to feel very poppy, femme and flirty. Meanwhile the second scene is a dark contrast that’s bold, punchy and reminiscent of those late summer party nights.
rough ANimatics
During the animatic phase my main focus was the line of action for our main character and the main 2DFX that they’d be interacting with. Of course water is always a tricky thing to animate especially traditionally so I really wanted make that a primary focus from the start of production. Originally I was planning on doing the waves as motion graphics or cut-out animation but as we moved further down the timeline I knew it had to be mostly traditional in order to fit in stylistically.
SCENE POLISH AND FINAL TEASER
The final polish of the two scenes were a LOT of fun. Admittedly in the diving scene I used a few pre-rendered FX from RTFX for the sake of time, however I managed to blend them in nicely with my own motion designs and hand drawn FX so I’m pretty happy with the final product. The lyrics were all animated through After Effects, all the traditional animation was done in Adobe Animate and compositing in Premiere Pro.
